Alice Bailey Art Show Opening

  • The Garage Rapid City 402 West Saint Joseph Street Rapid City, SD, 57701 United States (map)

Alice Bailey has always been interested in the juxtaposition of natural and man-made environments, and how the physicality of objects can simultaneously reference tradition, domestic life, industrial development, and the inevitable power of nature. For this exhibition, she used her camera to study the montage of materials used in Western Alaskan communities accessible only by boat, bush plane, or snow machine. The title Arctic Entry refers to the outer entrance commonly built onto Alaskan dwellings--a buffer zone that increases insulation and provides storage for chest freezers, perishable food, outerwear, tanned hides, and freshly caught fish or meat. It also serves as a bridge between public and private life, as one must pass through the arctic entry to knock on the inner door.
